Climate Action Plan
In 2018, the city council adopted a Climate Action Plan aiming for carbon neutrality by 2040. This plan provides guidance for residents, businesses, and the city on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change impacts.
Depave SLP Program
The Depave SLP program encourages commercial property owners to replace pavement with green spaces. Eligible projects include rain gardens, native plants, and permeable pavers, contributing to flood reduction and improved air quality.
Westwood Hills Nature Center
The Westwood Hills Nature Center serves as a model for zero-energy building construction, demonstrating that net-zero energy design is achievable even in Minnesota’s cold winters.
Environmental Challenges
Despite these efforts, the city faces environmental challenges, such as groundwater contamination in the Highway 100 and County Road 3 area. The U.S. EPA designated this site as a federal Superfund site in 2020, and investigations are ongoing to address the contamination.
