In 2018, the city council adopted a Climate Action Plan with the ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. This plan provides guidance for residents, businesses, and the city on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
City Initiatives
To achieve the goals outlined in the Climate Action Plan, the city has implemented several initiatives:
- Depave SLP: This program encourages commercial property owners to replace pavement with native plants, trees, rain gardens, pollinator habitats, or permeable pavers. Benefits include creating welcoming natural spaces, reducing winter maintenance costs, cooling the local area, reducing flooding, and improving air quality.
- Habitat Restoration: The city recognizes the importance of maintaining and restoring natural resources. Programs include buckthorn management, pollinator-friendly initiatives, and the Westwood Hills Nature Center Master Vegetation Management Plan.
- Westwood Hills Nature Center: This 160-acre nature park features prairie, forest, and marsh areas, with trails and an educational center. The new interpretive center provides expanded public exhibit space and flexible learning spaces for environmental education.
Community Involvement
Accomplishing the goals of the Climate Action Plan requires the participation of residents, businesses, and organizations throughout the community.
